Bike - 20km
- On the way out, your helmet must be securely fastened before touching your bike.
- The rules of the road apply at all times.
- No drafting.
- When re-entering transition, your helmet must remain fastened until your bike is racked.
The bike leg for the Fingal Sprint Triathlon 2008 will be on the same tried and
tested route as last year. Newly resurfaced sections will encourage a fast bike leg,
while the long, sweeping country lanes are guaranteed to bring out the best in one's
bike handling skills!
In addition, we anticipate that the moving of the event from Saturday to Sunday
will result in a significant reduction of traffic on the route.
Your helmet MUST be securely fastened before de-racking your bike.
On leaving the transition area, wheel your bicycle over the timing mat.
You may not mount your bicycle until after you have crossed the mount/dismount timing mat.
Route
Out
After leaving the NAC:
- Turn immediately right onto Snugboro Road.
- Proceed to the Ballycoolin Industrial Estate crossroad and turn left.
- Turn right (3 o'clock) at the roundabout and hit top speed along this fast, smooth stretch.
- Take the 11 o'clock exit at the next roundabout and this will take you towards the third roundabout
at Dolly Heffernan's.
- Do NOT stop for a pint at Dolly's, but proceed down Ratoath Road (9 o'clock exit).
Extreme caution is advised all along this stretch as there are tight bends and the condition
of the road surface isn't ideal. All of you with mountain bikes will likely benefit from this!!!
- Continue straight through the Oaks (Hollystown) roundabout, and follow the long winding country
road for approximately another 5km before you hit the turnaround point.
The turnaround will be clearly marked and marshaled.
Back
From the turnaround point, retrace the outward route:
- Proceed down Ratoath Road to the Oaks (Hollystown) roundabout.
- Continue straight through the roundabout and at the next roundabout (Dolly's),
take the 2 o'clock exit.
- Proceed down this stretch and at the next roundabout, turn left (10 o'clock exit).
- Continue towards the Blanchardstown Industrial Park roundabout and turn left onto
Ballycoolin road.
- Follow the directions of the Garda/marshal and turn right at the Ballycoolin
junction back onto Snugborough Road.
When re-entering the NAC, you must dismount your bicycle as directed by the marshal at
the mount/dismount timing mat prior to entering the transition area.
Safety
- Cycling is not allowed in transition area.
- A competitor may not compete in the cycling segment with a bare torso. The lower body must also be covered adequately.
- As the bike course is not closed to other traffic, rules and regulations of the road must be obeyed at all times.
Instructions and directions from the Garda and race marshals must be obeyed.
- Competitors are personally responsible that their bicycles are in satisfactory condition and for providing necessary tools
and spare parts to carry out repairs themselves. Receiving help, in the course of the competition, from others is not allowed.
- Cycling helmets are compulsory.
- The helmet must be securely fastened at all times when the competitor is in possession of the
bicycle, i.e., from the time they remove their bicycle from the rack at the start of the cycle, until after they have placed
their bicycle on the rack at the finish of the cycle.
- It is the responsibility of competitors to ensure that their helmet and bicycle are in safe and
roadworthy condition. Competitors who fail to do so may, for safety reasons, be denied participation
Race numbers
Allocated race numbers must be attached to the front of the helmet.
Race numbers must also be pinned to the front and back of your jersey / race top.
Drafting
This is strictly a non-drafting race. You must stay 5 metres (approximately three bike lengths)
behind the rider in front of you. When passing, you need to complete the pass within 15 seconds.
If you are being passed, you must drop back 5 metres from the person passing you.
Riding side by side within two meters of a rider is illegal.
Draft marshals will ensure that draft rules are strictly enforced.
If you are caught drafting, you will receive a time penalty.
